PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION FOR CALEDONIA-MUMFORD HIGH SCHOOL

The philosophy of education at Caledonia-Mumford Junior/Senior High School emanates from the recognition that humans are intelligent, moral, aesthetic, emotional and physical beings who are both individuals and a part of their social community.

  1. On the premise that people are intelligent, the goal of the school is to (a) impart knowledge, (b) stimulate logical thinking and (c) foster the making of sound judgements.

  2. On the premise that people are a moral creature, the goal of the school is to assist them in developing a system of values commensurate with their innate dignity.

  3. On the premise that people are aesthetic by nature, the goal of the school is to promote an understanding and appreciation of culture, the exercise of creativity, and the use of imagination.

  4. On the premise that people are emotional, the goal of the school is to engender the establishment of mental and emotional stability.

  5. On the premise that people are physical beings, the goal of the school is to provide the means to learn personal safety and the requirements for good health.

  6. On the premise that all people are unique, the goal of the school to help develop individual identities and to promote the responsible exercise of their inalienable rights.

  7. On the premise that people are social creatures, the goal of the school is to foster a spirit of cooperation among all members of the educational community (a) that is developed through participation intellectual, social, and athletic activities and (b) which stresses the necessity to respect law in order to gain the benefits that are derived when individuals work together for a common cause.

The curricula and teaching practices of Caledonia-Mumford Senior High School reflect a determination to produce integrated personalities. The latitude and levels of the courses are designed to enhance intelligent communication so students can take their places in a productive society. The curricula and practices are designed to teach students to appreciate beauty and the arts and to provide them with a balanced approach to life which enhances the development of the individual to become all he is capable of being. The curricula and practices are designed to provide a foundation in basic skills required to enjoy the benefits, meet the obligations and exercise the responsibilities that are incumbent upon individuals in a democratic society.

 

THE EDUCATION OBJECTIVES FOR CALEDONIA-MUMFORD HIGH SCHOOL

Based upon its philosophy of education, Caledonia-Mumford Senior High School strives to achieve the objectives that are listed below. Each subject area has a responsibility to meet them according to the content of its courses and the ability of its students. Caledonia-Mumford Senior High School aims to:

  1. Aid and assist pupils in acquiring knowledge and skills, both basic and specialized (a) throughout the curriculum, (b) through extra curricular activities.

  2. Strengthen the moral foundation of society by developing standards of ethical and moral living through class discussions, student activities, and released tome for instruction.

  3. Make life rewarding and satisfying by developing an appreciation of fine arts through art, music, literature, and humanities courses, through directed reading and various club activities, and by field trips and club excursions to cultural events.

  4. Promote mental and emotional health through the example and availability of the entire educational staff.

  5. Promote physical health through physical education and health courses, regular physical examinations, participation in athletic programs, and instruction in physical safety.

  6. Provide informed guidance for all students while stressing the goal of intelligent self-direction and individual worth through student grouping and differing levels of course difficulty, college nights, field trips, post-graduate courses and personal counseling.

  7. Promote and foster understanding of democracy in the United States and loyalty to its ideals through (a) a comprehensive Social studies program, (b) a study of its economic system of free enterprise, (c) related studies in all departments, and (d) participation in student activities such as class meetings, student council, activity programs and athletic events.

  8. Create a high performing, student centered, learning environment that engages high school students and effectively prepares them to achieve high academic standards.

In every case it is imperative that the knowledge and skills that are acquired be given practical application to the demands of a complex and changing society.
