EXCEL Capital Project Construction Schedule Powerpoint
November 14, 2008
Dear Caledonia-Mumford Parents and Residents
It was more than a year ago when District residents approved a public referendum on the EXCEL Aid Capital Project. This vote took place on June 26, 2007 and the work will address the following improvements:
New boilers for our school buildings
Heating system replacement in the Elementary School
Expansion of Energy Management Controls
Middle School Gym renovation
New Fire Alarm System at the Middle/High School
District-wide Technology infrastructure upgrades
The District received State Education Department approval on May 11, 2008 to proceed with this project. The Board decision last May to postpone the competitive bids proved to be a wise move. The District had a successful bid opening on October 7, 2008. We received bids from 48 contractors. On October 28, 2008, the Board of Education awarded bids to six prime contractors. This important work will begin soon!
Throughout this entire process, the District developed plans to prepare for the construction phase. These plans have changed based on valuable input by the contractors on how this work can be scheduled. Those of us involved in a home renovation project know that we can expect further
changes based on the progress of the work.
In order to assure a successful capital project, the District will follow these five goals:
1. Minimize the disruptions to school programs and maintain the construction schedule.
2. Assure the safety of students, staff, and visitors to our campus.
3. Keep the faculty, staff and the community informed on the progress of this work.
4. Involve teachers and staff in plans for temporary relocation of K-5 classrooms.
5. Develop plans to communicate timelines and any revisions to the current plans.
During the next few days, I will present in each school building an overview of this project and its impact on the 2008-2009 school year. A more detailed presentation will take place at the Board
Meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. A copy of the presentation can be viewed by following this link: EXCEL Capital Project Construction Schedule Powerpoint.
This renovation work will have a long-range positive impact on our school buildings. This EXCEL Aid Capital Project will be far different that the last two projects. All work will be done within the buildings. The vast majority of the work will take place in the Elementary School. It will touch every classroom. There will be significant work done in the Middle and High School as well. It is important work in areas that are “within the walls and not visible to the naked eye.” The project is scheduled for completion by August 1, 2009. Much of the work will be completed by the end of the current school year.
Within days, hallway ceiling tiles in each building will be removed for the duration of the project.
Soon the work that must take place “within the walls and not visible to the naked eye” will become visible. All work that is disruptive to the educational programs will be done at night and during
scheduled District recesses. There will be some contractors working during the day in non-student occupied areas. The District has hired Christa Construction to provide construction management services. Kevin Donaghue will be the Project Manager.
Our focus is on a successful project and maintaining the day-to-day operations of our schools. I am confident that with your help we can achieve our goals. It is going to take much cooperation, hard
work, and patience. Come next September 1 st , our school buildings will be better places for the
youth of our community.

On behalf of the Board of Education, I thank you for your support.
Sincerely,

David V. Dinolfo
